(b Coimbra, 1862; d Lisbon, 1930). Portuguese sculptor. He studied at the Escola de Belas-Artes, Lisbon, and was a pupil of V?tor Bastos and Jos? Sim?es de Almeida. In 1893 he gained recognition by winning the Afonso de Albuquerque competition in which Ant?nio Teixeira Lopes and Sim?es de Almeida also competed. His work is always naturalistic in character, though at times rather scenographic with a tendency to over-embellish. In Lisbon he made the monuments to Pinheiro Chagas (bronze, 1908; Avenida da Liberdade), Sousa Martins (bronze, 1907; Campo de Sant' Ana) and Eduardo Coelho (bronze, 1904; S Pedro de Alc?ntara). He made a bust of King Charles (undated) and a statue of Jurisprudence (marble, 1921; both Lisbon, Assembl. N.). Among his many statues throughout Portugal are Joaquim Augusto de Aguiar (bronze, 1912; Coimbra, Largo da Portagem).
