(b Fontanges, 1530-40; d Toulouse, 1580-82). French composer. From c 1560 he lived in Toulouse and associated with the Ronsardist poets; late in life he came under Jesuit influence. His surviving works, 84 chansons (3 vols., 1576-8) and 27 sacred pieces (1582), probably represent only half his output. The chansons, mostly four-voice settings of Ronsard, combine structural clarity with Italianate verbal imagery; the sacred pieces are simple homophonic settings of Gregorian melodies.
