Review

This 2003 compilation from The Right Stuff packs 27 tracks together and sticks to the material Teddy Pendergrass released before his 1984 jump to Elektra/Asylum. Though he remained successful long after leaving Philadelphia International, he continually lit up the upper reaches of the black singles chart during the stretch covered here. The concentration on this specific era, along with the depth of coverage, makes this set ideal for those who have all the original albums on vinyl but don't want to go so far as to re-acquire them on CD. This hits virtually all the significant highlights, including "Can't We Try," "Close the Door," "Turn Off the Lights," "Is It Still Good to Ya?," "I Don't Love You Anymore," "I Want My Baby Back," and "I Can't Live Without Your Love." (As you can see, TP had all the bases covered.) For newcomers or those who want to stick to the basics, The Best of Teddy Pendergrass, The Very Best of Teddy Pendergrass, and Significant Singles remain viable one-disc options. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi
