Anthony Thistlethwaite (sometimes credited as Anto Thistlethwaite) (born 31 August 1955, Lutterworth, England) is a British multi-instrumentalist best known as a member of the folk-rock group The Waterboys.
He and leader Mike Scott remained the nucleus of the band from the early 1980s until Thistlethwaite's departure in 1992. Thistlethwaite was invited by Scott to join the Waterboys after Scott heard Thistlethwaite performing a saxophone solo on the song "Johnny Smiled Slowly"[1], a track for the 1982 Nikki Sudden album, Waiting on Egypt. Although Thistlethwaite initially joined The Waterboys as a saxophonist, he has performed other instruments, especially the mandolin, while touring with the band.
Thistlethwaite played sporadically with Irish band The Saw Doctors and released solo albums including Crawfish and Caviar, recorded in both New Orleans and Saint Petersburg and featuring a guest appearance by Mick Taylor on several of the album's tracks. The St. Petersburg portion of the album features many local musicians, including Elina Karokhina on balalaika.
Thistlethwaite re-joined The Waterboys between 1999 and 2000. He has also played on albums by, or toured as a member of, The Psychedelic Furs, Fairground Attraction, World Party, Robyn Hitchcock and The Mission.
Nowadays, Thistlethwaite plays regularly and tours with The Saw Doctors.
Sharon Shannon, also a member of The Waterboys, recorded a song that she named "Anto's Cajun Cousins" on her eponymous debut album.
Thistlethwaite has released three solo albums:
