An antibody to the surface antigen of the hepatitis B virus; indicative of either active immunity to the hepatitis B virus as a result of prior infection or passive immunity from the presence of hepatitis B immunoglobulin in the blood. It may also be an immune response triggered as the result of having received vaccination against the hepatitis B virus.
