anti-estrogenic substance
A substance that blocks the activity of oestrogen or accelerates the metabolic breakdown of oestrogens. Anti-oestrogen supplements are abused in sport to optimize testosterone levels and increase muscle bulk. They are on the World Anti-Doping Agency's 2005 Prohibited List. Oestrogen is important not only for the regulation of the reproductive system, but for growth, bone development, and metabolism. Consequently, the potential effects of anti-oestrogens are numerous. Anti-oestrogenic substances include clomiphene, cyclofenil, and fulvestrant, and Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs), such as raloxifene, tamoxifen, and toremifene.
