The anti-folk scene has been alive and well for some time now, in all its ironic glory, in Lower Manhattan. So it's only fitting that it finally be represented by a compilation. And it's only fitting that resident kingpins the Moldy Peaches -- Adam Green and Kimya Dawson (she of the bunny suit and potty mouth) -- compile the album. Green and Dawson contribute a solo track each; overall, however, they leave the spotlight to lesser-known colleagues, such as Jeffrey Lewis ("You Don't Have to Be a Scientist to Do Experiments on Your Own Heart"), Diane Cluck ("Monte Carlo"), Jim Flynn ("Smokescreen a Cappella Techno Blues"), Lach ("Drinking Beers With Mom"), and Paleface ("Say What You Want"). As one would expect, Antifolk, Vol. 1 is packed with the barbed absurdity, glib profanity, and low-key instrumentation (primarily acoustic guitars) that characterize the scene. It's not all about irony or humor though, and even when it is, many will be surprised at the songcraft and heart amidst all the absurdity. ~ Erik Hage, All Music Guide
