autoantibodies against phospholipids that bind to soluble blood factors involved in activating the coagulation cascade. The resultant hypercoagulability can lead to deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or complications in pregnancy. The syndrome can be primary (without evidence of other autoimmune disease); secondary (with evidence of such disease); or catastrophic (extensive and often fatal).
