A drug that relieves or prevents cough.

A drug that suppresses coughing either by a local soothing action or by depressing the cough centre in the central nervous system. Great care must be taken by athletes when purchasing a cough or cold remedy because many over-the-counter medicines contain substances prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
