French Literature Companion:

Antoine, Bernard and Joseph de Jussieu

Jussieu, Antoine de (1686-1758), Bernard de Jussieu (1699-1777), Joseph de Jussieu (1704-79). These brothers were all botanists, famous for their plant-gathering expeditions and their contributions to the Jardin du Roi (later Jardin des Plantes). Bernard was a teacher of genius, who had a decisive influence on botanical history. His nephew, Antoine-Laurent (1748-1836), wrote a crucially important treatise (Genera plantarum, 1789) on the ‘natural’ system of plant classification.
