(b Ancienne-Lorette, nr Quebec City, 29 Feb 1804; d Neuville, Quebec City, 4 Sept 1895). Canadian painter. He was apprenticed to Joseph L?gar? from 1819 to 1825, when he opened a studio in Quebec City. The following year he went to Europe to perfect his technique. He studied in Paris under Paulin Gu?rin and on his return in 1830 re-established his studio in Quebec City. From 1834 to 1840 Th?ophile Hamel was his apprentice. In 1836 he received an important commission for 14 large pictures of the Stations of the Cross for the church of Notre-Dame in Montreal (several in Montreal, Mus. F.A.). He also produced numerous copies of religious subjects.
