Review

This three-CD box set contains the recordings from Omega's most creatively and commercially successful period. At that time, the group issued their albums in separate English- and Hungarian-language versions, so each CD contains both versions of the respective albums -- Idörabló/Time Robber (1976-1977), Csillagok Útján/Skyrover (1978), and Gammapolis/Gammapolis (1979). Unfortunately, the thick accents in the English versions make them sound almost as foreign as if sung in Hungarian. However, Omega's music is the main attraction here. Though labeled "space rock" on the cover, it would be more accurately described as progressive hard rock, with several changes of vocal and instrumental themes and tempos during each piece, and rich instrumental arrangements as well. There are some very long, solemn interludes with tense guitar riffs and gloomy mid-tempo organ solos. Idörabló/Time Robber is the most commercially successful of the three, though Csillagok útján/Skyrover is probably the most musically diverse. ~ Yuri German, Rovi
