Anton (Franz Josef) Eberl

(b Vienna, 13 June 1765; d there, 11 March 1807). Austrian composer. Active as a pianist from the 1770s, he made two German concert tours, the first (1795-6) with Constanze Mozart. In 1796-1802 he stayed twice in St Petersburg as Kapellmeister. His output includes five symphonies, three piano concertos, chamber music, seven piano sonatas and other piano music; he also wrote stage works for Vienna (1787-1801), songs and cantatas. His early piano works show the influence of Mozart (possibly his teacher) and some, notably variations, appeared under Mozart's name; the later works show Romantic traits. Latterly Eberl's music, especially the E♭ Symphony and the Sonata op.39, was compared favourably with Beethoven's.
