Antonio Drove

Biography

Spanish director Antonio Drove specialized in comedies tinged with subtle political and social commentary. Outside his native country, Drove is best known for his English-language film El Tunel/The Tunnel (1989), a suspenseful romantic comedy based on a novel by Ernesto Sábato. A native of Madrid, Drove graduated from the Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía in 1967. Right from the start, Drove's diploma film, La Caza de Brujas/Witch Hunt (1968), received critical acclaim, but because it was a sharp attack on the educational policies of the Catholic Church, the film was barred from general release. Drove received further kudos for his first professional short ¿Que Puede Hacer con una Chica?/What Can You Do With a Girl? (1969). Drove made his feature-film debut with La Noche de los Tiempos/The Night of the Times (1972). In addition to working in feature films, Drove also directs episodes of television series such as Eurocops (1988) and L Huella del Crimen/The Traces of the Crime (1990). ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
