Plot

The "Big Blast" refers to the blowout of the Mount St. Helens volcano on May 18, 1980, which killed almost 60 people and blasted to splinters enough timber to build 600,000 homes. Hosted by John Viehman, this video features episode seven from the third season of the award-winning PBS television series. In this installment, Viehman joins Park Ranger Francisco Valenzuela backpacking into the blast zone to recall that day and witness the extraordinary recovery of the mountain over the past 20 years. Highlights of this program include a special side-trip by helicopter into the still-smoking crater with a geologist, and a discussion of what has been learned from the catastrophic blast. ~ Steve Blackburn, All Movie Guide
