Uncapitalized, unalphabetized prefix to Welsh patronymics, comparable to Old Irish mac-; e.g. Gwyn ap Nudd is alphabetized thus, not as ap Nudd, Gwyn. Through mutation, it may also be spelled fab-, mab-, vab-. See also UA-.
