APEC Peru 2008 will be a series of political meetings to be held in Peru between the 21 members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. Leaders from all countries will meet on November 22, 2008 in the capital city of Lima.
Planning
Peru oficially joined the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation in 1998 when the summit was in Malaysia and then President Alberto Fujimori convinced the leaders that Peru was a progressing economy. It was in 2003 when under the Presidency of Alejandro Toledo, Peru was designated as the host nation of the 2008 summit and since Alan García took office in 2006, he has been helding meetings with the Mayor of Lima Luis Castañeda Lossio, in order to prepare the city for the meetings starting on February 2008.
The special delegate to organize the Summit is the Vice President Luis Giampietri who has been telling to the press that the Presidents will gather in the Ministry of Defense headquarters, known as the "Pentagonito".
Alongside with Giampietri, the other members of the Commission are:
- Mercedes Aráoz, Minister of Foreign Commerce and Tourism
- Luis Carranza, Minister of Economy and Finance
- José García Belaúnde, Minister of Foreign Relations
More members
Since 2004, Colombia and Ecuador have been expecting to join APEC when Peru hosts the meeting, but in APEC Australia 2007, the leaders agreed not to allow any more members until 2010[1].
