Golden Minerals Company can afford to get distracted by something shiny. In fact, it's counting on it. The company emerged in 2009 from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and changed its name from Apex Silver Mines. Though it sold what had been its primary asset, the San Cristobal silver mine in southern Bolivia, Golden Minerals owns several other properties in Argentina, Mexico, and Peru, where it continues to explore for other minerals. The company filed for bankruptcy protection at the beginning of 2009 only to emerge two months later having sold its majority stake in the San Cristobal mine to Sumitomo. (That company had already purchased a 35% stake in San Cristobal in 2006.)
