Shias believe that the souls of the Prophets and the Imams are derived from the first light in the universe which was created by Allah, the light of Aql, which in Arabic roughly translates as knowledge.[citation needed] It is through this knowledge that all living and non-living entities know Allah, and all of humanity is dependent and united in this light.
