Akre, is a city and district in the Ninewa Governorate, 120 km from the Dahuk Governorate. Defend International President, Widad Akrawi and the Kurdish film director, Hiner Saleem were born in this city. The Iraqi Ambassador to Vienna, Tariq Aqrawi is also from Akre, and Dr. Abdullah Saeed Abdullah D.G of D.O.H of Duhok lived in Aqrah.

Several thousand Assyrians refugees from Hakkari settled here in the 1920s after they were expelled by the Turks. [1]
