(geology) A porous formation that absorbs water slowly but will not transmit it fast enough to furnish an appreciable supply for a well or spring.


 
 

A rock, such as London clay, which does not allow the passage of water through it; an impermeable rock. Such a rock will act as a boundary to an aquifer.
