Ara Maxima

Ara Maxima (‘greatest altar’), the altar of Hercules at Rome, which stood in the Forum Boarium. It was here that, as related by Virgil in the Aeneid (book 8), Aeneas found Evander sacrificing. The spot was connected with the legend of Hercules and Cacus. Tithes of booty and commercial profits, etc., were offered at the altar.
