Aragvi River

Wikipedia: Aragvi River
The Aragvi meets the Mtkvari at Mtskheta

The Aragvi River and its basin is located in Georgia on the southern slope of the Caucasus Mountains. The river is 112 km. in length. The basin covers an area 2,724 km² The ground strata is mostly sandstone, slate, and limestone. The hydro-electricity dam built on the river produces much of Georgia’s power. The building of the dam in 1986 formed the Zhinvali reservoir.[1] Near the reservoir on the river is the Ananuri castle with its Assumption Church.

The Aragvi meets the river Mtkvari some miles below the dam, at Mtskheta. The fortified location Ananuri is located upstream of the dam on the Aragvi.
