Arbeitsgruppe 4

Austrian group of architects formed in 1952 by Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent (b 1931) and Johannes Spalt (b 1920) at the Akademie der Bildenden K?nste, Meisterschule Clemens Holzmeister, Vienna, after participating in a competition with Otto Leitner. It emerged early with its programmatic and innovative works such as the Wohnraumschule and community housing projects. Early buildings such as the church of Parsch, Salzburg (1953-6; see AUSTRIA, fig. 10), still deal in Clemens Holzmeister's romantic architectural concept made relative by the central and northern European Modernism of the 1950s. Participation in the Sommerakademie, Salzburg, at which Kurrent and Spalt were assistants to Konrad Wachsmann, led the group on the one hand to push on with the rational and constructivist interest, and on the other to start to deal systematically with the history of Viennese Modernism
