Arbogast of Strasbourg

Arbogast of Strasbourg (mid-7th century), bishop. Appointed bishop of Strasbourg by King Dagobert I, he made several pious foundations when in office. His Life, attributed to Utone, bishop of Strasbourg (d. 965), claims that he was a hermit who lived in the forest of Haguenau, north of the city. Later he was surrounded by disciples and later still founded the monastery of Surbourg. A church was built in his honour in 1069, but it was destroyed by Protestants in 1530 and his relics were scattered in the Thirty Years War. As patron his feast is celebrated in the city and diocese of Strasbourg and in several Swiss cantons. Feast: 21 July.
