Arbogastes

Barbarian general, probably Frankish, served under Theodosius the Great and sent by him to assist Valentinian II. At Valentinian's death in ad 392, Arbogastes proclaimed Eugenius emperor, the first of the barbarian generals to take this step, but he and his protégé were defeated in ad 394 and he committed suicide.
