Archaeological Institute of America
(AIA) [Ge]
Founded in 1879, the AIA is dedicated to the greater understanding of archaeology, the protection and preservation of the world's archaeological resources and the information they contain, and the encouragement and support of archaeological research and publication.
A non-profit-making cultural and educational organization, it is chartered by the US Congress and is the oldest and largest archaeological organization in North America. In 1995, its membership was approximately 11 000.
The AIA has its headquarters in Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts. It publishes the magazine Archaeology and the American Journal of Archaeology, as well and an annual bulletin of archaeological opportunities around the world, a newsletter, and monographs. There is an annual meeting at which professionals present the latest results of archaeological fieldwork and research, mainly in the classical domain.
