Arctic Cool began in early 2000 as a collaboration between Barry Becket and Fred Waltz as a way of keeping themselves entertained in their small, coastal town of Cordova, AK. With a quirky instrumentation of flute, saxophone (Beckett), guitar, and drum machine (Weltz), Arctic Cool has a sound all their own that combines rock, jazz, and bluegrass with a stripped-down production that "utilizes woodstove and computer technologies." The latter was showcased on their self-released, self-titled 2001 debut recording, which was recorded in a friend's attic. ~ Mike DaRonco, Rovi
