Review

Occasionally, the Vitamin label likes to switch up the format of its long-running string quartet tribute series, adding a descriptive tagline to a feted artist's set. Musically however, Are You Breathing doesn't differ from the imprint's established template. It presents cuts from Disturbed's two albums, performed instrumentally on violin, viola, cello, and bass. These re-versions aren't as urgent as the real thing, as the lack the seething darkness of the perpetual angry guy, Disturbed vocalist David Dramain. But the set still manages to kick up some dust, particularly on "Down With the Sickness", "Prayer", and "Stupify". Best might be "Remember", which wavers between a stark, nearly Eastern European melody in the verse and the chorus's bittersweet surge. Not essential, but interesting for Disturbed fans looking for less loud music by which to write angry missives to tortured adolescence. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
