Area code 514 is a telephone area code that covers all of the Island of Montreal, Île Perrot, and Île Bizard in the province of Quebec. Area code 514 was one of the 86 original Numbering Plan Areas defined in 1947. At that time, it was used to cover the western half of the province, but in 1957, it was reduced to the region surrounding Montreal; the final boundary change occurred in 1998 when area code 450 was split off. It overlays with the new area code 438 beginning on November 4, 2006, as part of the change to mandatory ten-digit dialing, according to the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA).
Area code 438 was considered for overlaying 450 as well, but a later decision determined that 579 would be the code for that area.[1]
