Area code 709

Wikipedia: Area code 709

Area code 709 is the telephone area code in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, encompassing the whole province. Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as New Brunswick, was originally part of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island's 902 area code between 1947 and 1955. The new 506 area code was split off for Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as New Brunswick, between 1955 and 1962. Newfoundland and Labrador's 709 Area Code was established sometime during early 1962, splitting off from 506 retained by New Brunswick, with customer-dialable locations coming on-line during the next several years. The previous identification of Newfoundland and Labrador by 902 and then 506, and even the earlier years by 709, was mostly for Operator routing purposes, since there was very little customer dialing of long distance calls in the US and Canada prior to the 1960s.

The incumbent local exchange carrier in 709 is Aliant (part of the Bell Aliant income trust), which was produced from a merger that included NewTel Communications (previously Newfoundland Telephone). (There have been as many as nine companies in Newfoundland and Labrador up to 1951, the last independent being acquired in 1988.)
