Area code 778 is an overlay area code for most of the Canadian province of British Columbia. It was created on November 3, 2001 as a concentrated overlay of area code 604.[1] Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced on June 7, 2007 that 778 area code will expand to cover the entire province effective July 4, 2007 because of exhaustion of phone numbers in area code 250.[2] As of June 23, 2008, 10-digit dialing became mandatory in BC; trying to use 7-digit dialing would trigger a recorded message to remind of the new rule. After September 12, 2008, 7-digit dialing ceased to function.[3]
