It is, in terms of population, one of the smallest area codes in North America, with only about 320,000 people in the region served by 906. It was created as a split from 616 on Sunday, March 19, 1961, as a flash-cut, with no official permissive dialing period.

It is not uncommon for people who live within the Upper Peninsula to refer to the area as "the 906". Although this also occurs for people who live in other areas (e.g., Detroiters have been known to call the city "the 313"), it is particularly common in the Upper Peninsula.^{[citation needed]}

History

906 was created because part of northern Michigan was threatening to secede,^[1] either becoming part of Wisconsin, or create Superior, to be named after one of the Great Lakes. Despite dating from 1961, it is not expected to be exhausted until 2038. [1]
