The ArenaBowl is the Arena Football League's championship game. From 1987 to 2004, the ArenaBowl was hosted by either the team with the better regular-season record or the higher seeding in the playoffs. From ArenaBowl XIX in 2005 until ArenaBowl XXII in 2008, the game was played at a neutral site. ArenaBowl XXII took place on July 27, 2008, in New Orleans, Louisiana, with the American Conference champion San Jose SaberCats facing the National Conference champion Philadelphia Soul. The Soul won the game, 59-56.

- The Pittsburgh Gladiators relocated in 1991 to become the Tampa Bay Storm.
- The Nashville Kats relocated in 2002 to become the Georgia Force. The Kats were brought back as an expansion team in 2005 and assumed all former team history up to the point when the original Kats relocated to Georgia. The Force are regarded as a completely separate team and keep records from their establishment in 2002 to the present, similar to the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens situation in the NFL.

*includes two appearances as Pittsburgh Gladiators (0-2, 42 points, 84 points allowed)
**both appearances as Iowa Barnstormers -- not to be confused with the AF1 club of the same name. The new Barnstormers (which resumed play in 2008 in AF2) will be an Arena Football One club in 2010.
NOTE: It is expected with Arena Football One attempting to purchase the assets of the former Arena Football League in 2009 that the "Tier One" of the new league will play for the ArenaBowl XXIII. Should the deal be successful, the ArenaBowl, trophy, and all intellectual propery rights will become property of Arena Football One.
