ARIAD Pharmaceuticals is exploring the myriad possibilities for new cancer treatments. The firm's lead drug candidate deforolimus targets solid tumors and hematological cancers. The drug blocks the cellular functions essential to the disease process by basically starving cancerous cells. The development-stage biotech is developing the drug in partnership with Merck.
