Arland, Marcel (1899-1986). French novelist and journalist. Having flirted with Dadaism, Arland joined the Nouvelle Revue Française, which he codirected from 1952. A witty and urbane critic and essayist, he wrote a score of short novels, typically analysing relations in small rural communities. He was elected to the Académie Française in 1968.

Arland, Marcel (märsĕl' ärlŏnd'), 1899-1986, French writer. Arland was editor of the Nouvelle Revue Française (1953-77). Emphasizing a search for salvation that is both ethical and aesthetic, his work includes the novels L'Ordre (1929) and A perdre haleine [out of breath] (1960). He also wrote many essays and short stories.
