Biography

Fully living up to her on-screen moniker, Arline Pretty was reportedly awarded her overly cute name by her musician mother, who adopted it from a character in The Bohemian Girl. As a young adult, Pretty played with the Columbia Stock Company for three years and even appeared in Shakespearean repertory with Charles Hannaford prior to making her screen debut in 1913 in Florida. Later contracted by Universal, Pretty appeared opposite King Baggot in a series of short melodramas before reaching stardom in The Secret Kingdom (1917), a Vitagraph serial about Westerners discovering a mythical kingdom. That same year she did The Hidden Hand for genre leader Pathé and would finish her serial duties in 1920 with the independently produced A Woman in Grey. In between the serial thrills, Pretty was Douglas Fairbanks' leading lady in In Again, Out Again (1917) and later starred opposite Dustin Farnum in the popular Fox melodrama Bucking the Barrier (1923). No longer in the bloom of youth, she ended her screen career with a supporting role in Olive Borden's Virgin Lips (1928). ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide
