The fighting force mobilized to wage the Algerian war of independence.

Beginning in 1954, the Armée de Libération Nationale (ALN; National Liberation Army) was composed of guerrilla units divided into five and later six wilayas (military districts within Algeria). From 1956 onward, standing armies began to emerge among expatriate Algerians in both Morocco and Tunisia, which, by 1960, came under a unified general staff.
