Crane, Arnold (b. 1932). American photographer, best known for his informal portraits and nudes. His freelance work in the 1950s reflected his interest in documenting the diversity of everyday life. After a decade of legal training and practice he returned to photography in the late 1960s and embarked on a lengthy project to portray eminent photographers. The series, including Ansel Adams, Bill Brandt, and Man Ray, appeared as The Other Side of the Camera in 1995. He also took many close-ups of the female nude, in 1992 describing this work as ‘textural-visceral landscapes of the human female form’.
