Arnold (Ludwig) Mendelssohn

(b Racibórz, 26 Dec 1855; d Darmstadt, 19 Feb 1933). German teacher,composer and organist, son of a second cousin of Felix Mendelssohn. He studied in Berlin. An advocate of Bach and Schütz, he contributed to the renewal of interest in Lutheran church music, teaching at Bonn, Cologne, Darmstadt and Frankfurt, where Hindemith was among his pupils. His compositions include polyphonic sacred music, folklike stage works and songs.
