It may be called Beijing today, but the capital city of China was known as Pekin back in 1910. Inaccessible to photographers for many years, the city began permitting cameramen within its walls after the Boxer rebellion. Around Pekin, released by the Pathe company, was hailed at the time of its release as the best and most thorough documentary of its kind. The film ran 213 feet, or approximately five minutes, but it was more than enough time to enthrall non-Chinese audiences with the splendor of the ancient city. Original prints of Around Pekin were color-tinted by hand. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
