Arpajon is a commune in the Essonne department in the Île-de-France region in northern France.

Seat of the canton of 9,159 inhabitants, the commune is located 30 km (19 mi) south of Paris, accessible by the N20, and to 20 km (12 mi) in the north of Étampes. Its inhabitants are Arpajonnais.

  • Covered market of 15th century.
  • A market takes place each Friday since 13th century.
  • The Saint-Clément Church (11th century and 15th centuries). In 1782, Benjamin Franklin installed the lightning conductor there.
  • Arpajon shelters also cinematographic studios in which many films or television broadcasts are shot.
  • Until 1720, the city was called Châtres. It took its current name following the acquisition of the commune by Louis de Sévérac, Marquis of Arpajon (father of Anne d'Arpajon, comtesse de Noailles). To the French Revolution, it bore the name of Francval.

Events

The third weekend from September takes place with Arpajon the Foire aux haricots (The Bean Festival), a trade event and artisanal which lasts four days. The bean celebrated here is the chevrier.
