A measure passed in January 1879 to increase pensions for Union Civil War veterans. It called for the payment of pensions to the disabled from the date of discharge from the army, instead of from the time of the last claim. Political pressure from union veterans and the Grand Army of the Republic helped enact the law. By 1880 it had nearly doubled prior annual pension expenditure.
