[uh-ROY-oh SEH-koh] Small, 18,240-acre viticultural area located in Monterey County, California, southeast of Monterey. Arroyo Seco, which is a subzone in the larger monterey ava begins just south of Soledad and extends to south of Greenfield. The major white grapes grown here are chardonnay and riesling along with some gewürztraminer. Pinot noir does well in this cooler area, and some cabernet sauvignon is grown. Jekel Vineyard is the main winery in this region, although a number of other wineries obtain grapes from this area's vineyards and use the "Arroyo Seco AVA" designation on their labels.
