| 1936 | Triple-A Plowed Under. The first of the playwright's "Living Newspaper" productions, dramatizing timely social and political issues, looks at the lot of farmers during the Depression. It would be followed by Power (1937), a plea for affordable energy for the poor. Arent contributed to the labor revue Pins and Needles (1937) and would subsequently write and adapt plays for radio and television. |

The most successful of the "Living Newspaper" productions of the Federal Theatre Project--theatrical documentaries using newspaper articles and other printed evidence for their text--illustrates the assertion made by President Roosevelt that a third of the nation was ill-housed, ill-clad, and ill-nourished. |
