(b Boston, Mass., 1894; d Brookline, Mass., 1979). Amer. conductor. Joined Boston SO as violinist 1915, later violist. Formed Boston Sinfonietta, conducting it in Boston and on tour. In 1930 became cond. of Boston 'Pops' concerts, spreading their fame through recordings.
