(1851–1942)
London-born architect and designer. His first work was influenced by Norman Shaw but he also drew on Italian Renaissance, Queen Anne, and Wrenaissance styles. He founded the Century Guild, based on Arts-and-Crafts principles (1882), which made well-designed artefacts, including furniture. These were featured in The Hobby Horse from 1884, which influenced Voysey and Mackintosh. In some of his designs, notably the title-page of Wren's City Churches (1883), early
