Artur Malawski

Music Encyclopedia: Artur Malawski

(b Przemysl, 4 July 1904; d Kraków, 26 Dec 1957). Polish composer. He studied with Sikorksi at the Warsaw Conservatory and taught at the Kraków Conservatory (1945-57). His earlier music was influenced by Szymanowski, but his works of 1945-50 are unusually audacious for that time in Polish music (Overture, 1949; Toccata and Fugue in Variation Form for piano and orchestra, 1949). In his late works he adopted a dramatic, romantic expressiveness (e.g.Symphony no.2, 1956).
