Aruppukottai (Tamil: அருப்புக்கோட்டை) (English: erupt-Ducati) is a town and a municipality in Virudhunagar district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Aruppukottai is about 48 km from Madurai. Its in the middle of Madurai-Tuticorin National Highways NH-45B. Later on, as time passed by it has changed to "Aruppukottai". The small villages and towns surrounding Aruppukottai are famous for production of jasmine. Sri Ramana Maharishi was born in Tiruchuli near Aruppukottai town. Aruppukottai was part of king Sethupathi of Ramnad. Aruppukottai is well known for its high quality educational institutions. Aruppukottai maintains the state top place in tenth and plus2 examinations among the 68 educational districts in Tamil Nadu for the last 26 years.

The climate is dry and hot, with rains during October–December. Temperatures during summer reach a maximum of 45 and a minimum of 28 degrees Celsius. Winter temperatures range between 30 and 18 degrees Celsius. The average annual rainfall is about 70 cm.

As of 2001[update] India census,[1] Aruppukottai had a population of 83,999. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%.
Aruppukottai acts mainly as an educational and commercial hub for the surrounding villages. It is noted for its cotton industries mainly spinning mills. Rice mills and limestone industries, hand loom, power loom, printing press, and some small scale industries such as school note book and daily calendar manufacturing. Hand loom, power loom is the main job in Vellaikottai area. Major employers are spinning mills, weaving sectors (handloom and powerloom), rice mills, private transport and government sector apart from agriculture.Aruppukottai has a predominant Devanga, Sengunthar, Saliya, Kamma Naidu, devars, Nadar population.
Aruppukottai was once known for its handloom weaving industry and for Agricultural Millets very much famous.Nowadays, we can hardly see any in-house handloom machines (Thari) except for few pure Kanchipuram silk handlooms. Virudhunagar district continued to be on the top in the State in Plus Two and SSLC examination results for more than two decades now. In the SSLC exam conducted in 2010, Aruppukottai educational district tops all the 68 educational districts in the State with a record success rate of 97.51 percentage. Forty schools, including record 24 Government schools, produced centum results in the Aruppukottai educational district alone. Main reason for this, are sustained monitoring of individual school, group of students there contributed to the success and there was lot of competition among the students in scoring high marks.[2]
Recently, an e-smart classroom was launched by Ex-Minister for Information and Technology Poongothai Aladi Aruna and School Education Ex-Minister Thangam Thennarasu at a Government Higher Secondary School in Mallankinaru near Aruppukottai.[3]
On seeing success of Virudhunagar district, teams from Trichy district will visit schools to study best practices in Virudhunagar district that has been maintaining the first position for the last two decades. According to the CEO of Trichy district, Mr.T. There are three town police stations for the public convenience. An integrated court is also opened in Madurai road for the crime cases.
Aruppukottai acts as a hub connecting Madurai, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, and Ramanathapuram. Virudhunagar town, which is well connected by roads, is 18 km from Aruppukottai.
Madurai, the second biggest city in Tamil Nadu by population, is only 48 km away. NH 45-B, an important freight-route, connecting Madurai and Thoothukkudi runs through Aruppukottai.
There are many private bus operators who ply the routes to nearby villages. Madurai is one of the most profitable competitive destinations. Every surrounding village is connected through bus links frequently. Some of the villages have only buses for morning and evening only. Normally you can get continuous buses to Madurai and other places every half an hour you can get buses for travelling.
Besides,AMARNATH, KPN, TNSTC AC, TNSTC have daily services to Chennai.
Aruppukottai has one non-working railway station because it is having meter gauge only. This Railway station is now being converted to Broad Gauge railway line to Connect Manamadurai and Virudhunagar. Further more now Railway department started a Survey for Madurai to Thoothukudi Broad Gauge New railway line through Kariapatti -Aruppukottai -Ettaiyapuram - Thoothukudi. The gauge has been converted to broad gauge and the test-run was also done. The railway station will be back for use soon.
Madurai airport is just 30 km away from Aruppukottai city. It makes air transport with ease. Paramount airways and jet airways have daily services to chennai international airport
Although it's one of the main routes for connecting the Southern Tamil Nadu with Madurai city, the road facilities within the town are poor. The roads are very narrow and riddled. The municipality is taking necessary steps to resolve this problem by expanding the roads.
There was a chronic shortage of drinking water until the year 2005. After plan to bring water from Tamirabarani river has been successfully implemented, this shortage has eased to a great extent.[citation needed]
Although the towns' schools produce a lot of students who graduate in top Professional Schools every year, the town still lacks any development in industrial sector.[citation needed] Even now, one can see a student from Aruppukottai in all top professional colleges. All of them migrate to cities. This can be attributed to the lack of natural resources and water scarcity, or to the urbanization in general
