("God has made")
1. A son of David's sister Zeruiah and brother of Joab and Abishai. Asahel was one of David's thirty "mighty men" (II Sam 23:24; I Chr 2:16; 11:26). After the defeat of Abner's troops at the battle at Gibeon, Asahel, "fleet footed as a wild gazelle", pursued the fleeing Abner. Abner, after having twice warned Asahel to stop chasing him, turned and killed him in self-defense (II Sam 2:17-23). Later, although David had made his peace with Abner, Joab avenged his brother by the treacherous murder of Abner at Hebron (II Sam 3:22-30).
2. One of the Levites designated to teach the people the Law of the Lord in the cities of Judah in the third year of the reign of King Jehoshaphat.
3. One of the overseers, under Cononiah and Shimei, who assisted in the collection of the contributions to the house of the Lord during the reign of Hezekiah.
4. The father of a certain Jonathan who opposed a proposal of Ezra regarding those men who had married foreign wives (Ezra 10:10-15).
